WAFE is excited to share a new series of newsletters to help you better understand the election process in Washington State.
We are entering “election season,” an 8-month period when many important election activities take place. Knowing the timeline can help you stay informed and make sure you return your ballot on time.
Here is a simple overview of the 2026 election cycle in Washington:
April
Some areas will have Special Elections on April 28. These local elections decide issues like school levies, bonds, and other community measures. If you live in an area with a Special Election, your ballot has already been mailed to you. Click here to learn more.
May
Filing Week takes place in early May. This is when people officially file paperwork to run for office.
June–July
This is campaign season for the primaries. Candidates begin reaching out to voters. You may see ads, receive mailers, or have people knock on your door.
August
The Primary Election is on August 4. Voters choose the top two candidates for each race, regardless of political party. These candidates move on to the general election.
September–October
Campaigning increases. Candidates participate in debates and community forums, and you will likely see more ads and outreach. Registered voters will receive ballots in mid-October.
November
The General Election is on Tuesday, November 3. This is the main election where final decisions are made.
- Federal: Elections for U.S. House of Representatives seats
- State: Elections for State Representatives, some State Senators, judges, and voter initiatives
- Local: Elections for positions like mayor, city council, and school board, along with local measures
